It should be possible to freshen the files in an existing compressed file without selecting a file. I’m using version 9.51.01. Now I open an existing .zip, select “Freshen existing files” under the Options tab of the Add popup window and click Finish. An error window appears with the message “No File Selected.” This occurs even if the path is saved with the compressed file. It shouldn’t be necessary to select the file(s) which are already known to PowerArchiver and shown in the main window.

An even better option would be to add “Freshen” as an option in the pull-down Actions menu.

In the directory history dropdown list in the Extract dialog, it’d be useful if it the entries in the list would retain the correct case! It always seems to be converted to lower case.

What do you thinking about add PIMPLE compression into your PowerArchiver?
PIMPLE is a fast PAQ-like encoder - faster than PAQ6 in fastest mode and compresses better than PAQ6 in this mode.
Also, special for you, I can provide source code of PIMPLE.
Note on PIMPLE archiver - currently it on deveopment and current version is just beta-test version. “.pim" file format in development too - so, maybe future version can be backward incompatible with current ".pim” files. But it’s engine (PIMPLE 1.0 testbed) seems to be stable.

The key was that I only have “extract” options ticked in the context menu config, so uncompressing is not relevant. Therefore I hoped the PA context menu would only appear when I right-clicked on certain (ie. my selected) file formats - i.e. there was a bit of intelligence about whether a context menu was displayed (as there is with what entries are displayed). Thinking again, after reading your response and the points you raise, my requirement is not really valid. Thanks for your time.

This could be confusing, because I download a lot of utility programs that don’t have installers, but are a single .exe in a zip file. But for many things, it would be nice.

I just wish they would release another one to get rid of annoying bugs :-).

this is true but the default is not to extract paths which is enoying as other archive programs extract them as default. it would be nice if a dialog opens up saying do you want to extract paths. Better for people who don’t useually use compression programs. I tried to install recently a program via the install option in pa and it started to work but the setup failed as it could not findthge paths.

default is NOT no paths, of course! You probably selected it once and PA remembered that setting.

there will be no change to dynamic interface since it makes whole app slower plus you can not do full translations properly… This is why other apps have moved to separate versions…

should be able to tell you if it is a rar sfx or not or a zip etc . but it doesn’t w**zip can on all the formats it supports.

is useless clutter, and could much more simply be

“Extract to [filename]”

where [filename] is the name of the archive sans-extension.

Too bad, at only $20.00 PA is a steal for all of the formats it supports. I just don’t really ‘need’ all that support… what I need (want) is the quick access and control over SFX creation that this idea is about.

Let’s hope this makes it into the next release… But in any event 2006 looks good, and it seems to run a little faster than 2004 in some large zip file tests I performed?

A way around this would be to show some type of status, either in the status bar, toolbar, separate window, etc. that the program is checking for updates (this gets rid of the ‘spyware’ questions) then the window or status goes away if there is no update. If an update is present then you get a second status with the prompt. In this way the checking is done, but if there is no update there is no user interaction needed.

this is what we have done before. Only difference is that Update window went away if there was no update.

And this was the biggest problem report we got from PA users to our mailboxes in past 7 years.

do you mean actual thumbnails or large icons? since for creation of actual thumbnails (for example of pics or documents) PA would need to extract whole archive… Actual IE does not create thumbnails either, just uses larger icons…

If I have an archive open and select a file then I press the letter F it jumps to the first file that starts with F, fine.

If I now continuing to press F it goes to next file that starts with an F, but at the end it don’t jump to the fist file that starts with an F.

And if I now press A it should jump to the fist file that starts with an A, but it don’t. I can only go down in the alfabet not up

In other software, file explorers, etc, etc you can go up and down by selecting a file and then press any letter.

on the encryption dialog can it say pae encryption as this dialog is for pae encrpting files only.

currently, progress bar is not updated well while encrypting large files to PAE format. Unfortunatly, lot of rewriting would have to be made before this is done properly so I moved this to the wishlist (definetly longer job than 9.5 release).

I am evaluating PowerArchiver and find the PABE functionality extermely useful - especially to backup files to a FTP site. However, I am not able to encrypt the zip file as part of the script. I can set a password on the zip file, but this displays the contents of the archive and only prompts when extracting from archive.

Is there a way to zip, encrypt and ftp through a script using PowerArchiver?

This configuration could be useful, but is probably too complex for an “Express Lite” tool.

However, there have been rumours of a new PA backup utility coming - maybe enhanced filtering will be possible when that tool is available?

In the meantime, two workarounds occur to me -

Could you reorganise your environment to keep your source and object/bin directories completely seperate? This is what I did.

Disable the “include subdirectories” and explicitly select the folders you want to back-up. As this is stored in a “script” (the pbs file), it only has to be configured once. I do this now to exclude temp or cache files etc.

I upgraded to 9.50.24 and decided to see what the “System Default” startup folder option does. (I don’t think I’d tried it before) and I find PowerArchiver is now behaving near enough as I originally wanted. It starts on Desktop when run with no argument and I can still use the “Go Up one level” button to dodge in and out of archives.

Just to avoid confusion, admittedly based on their online documentation (I haven’t tried the utility) it would seem:-

it does not support ACE compression - only decompression. it does not support RAR compression - it provides a plug-in type option to utilise an already installed (and licensed) WinRAR/RAR.

This is same method used by others - as davidsplash already said.

And before someone asks again - no, at the moment PowerArchiver does not have this plug-in/third-party expansion type support (already been discussed many times).
If you have already installed/licensed those utilities, you might as well simply use the Explorer context menus they provide.

I use WinUda at only 18kb in size and can create sfx files by adding itself to the archive, note: winuda is packed with Upack by the same author, which i also use. i want the PA main window to have navigation buttons (foward, back, up) and to function as a explorer window where u can browse ur drives and folders, then just double-click for opening the archives. if this is not desired or feasible then I at least want a up or back button for browsing archives inside of other archives. that way i can go back to the original or first archive.

Just came across this post, and I wasn’t confused at all:

the current shell extension does not let you set any of the important options for a SFX like the Default “UnZip To” Folder which are possible in the interface driven method to create the EXE

I would definitely like to see this improvement in the shell extension to create SFX as well. Whatever default options are being used this way are things I would never actually use unless I was only ever creating and recreating the same exact SFX :rolleyes:.

I always use the forward/back mouse buttons in Explorer to change between previously visited folders. So if you jump between different archive directories in PA this is a really needed feature.

PA is developed using Delphi and I think xxxRAR is written in C/C++. Generally C/C++ compiles code smaller than Delphi does. It could be the reason.

WinRAR is developed using C++ Builder and Windows API instead of VCL and many 3rd party components.

Good idea because the SFX Maker is not supported anymore by ConeXware.

RAR 2.x is much better than ZIP and today nearly everyone can extract RAR files. :D

IIRC RAR 3.x offers better compression for text files (PPMD) and for RGB files (delta coder).

I could use a PC speaker beep when a long archiving is complete, this could be useful if your speakers are turned off. In this case, the program can alert you any time. I think this should be a configurable thing, so users who don’t want this feature can turn off. I’d like it. There sould be a Poweroff, Standby, and Hybernate dropdown menu, to do it after compression. (Really useful when you compress much data, and you are about to go somewhere or slepp) It would be also not bad if the program could somehow calculate and show the REMAINING time, it should do an analyzing before compression.

I’ve realized that this forum doesn’t use Skype protocol handler at the Instant Messaging section. Well, it could be easily created. A Skype user could be called with the “callto://username”. If the user, who clicks on the link and has the skype program, it will dial the user, for sending text I don’t know any handler, but I think when you can talk who cares?

Not sure how easy this is to do, but in the path bar (the grey bar) I would like it if when viewing a special folder (Desktop, My Documents, My Pictures etc that all the path before the folder is hidden.

Example:

C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Stephen\Eigene Dateien\Downloads

becomes:

Eigene Dateien\Downloads

or:

C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Stephen\Desktop

becomes:

Desktop

I have added it to the bug forum as it is related to most quaries about the encryption tool bar problems. I have also made sure it is kept alive untill it is fixed as this would sove about 99% of all why can’t we make aes zip encryted files here
